England, 1666  the darkest days of the Great Plague. The Doctor and his companions step from the TARDIS into a land gripped by fear and mistrust, but they soon discover that they are not the only new arrivals. Strange lights have been seen in the sky, the Grim Reaper stalks the local woods, and evidence of advanced technology is all around...

 

Doctor Who always seems to manage to portray ‘history‘ more competently than the ‘future’, perhaps due to the BBC’s love of historical drama. With The Visitation, the series dishes up a period piece of traditional Doctor Who, with convincing monsters and village yokels.

 

Peter Davison gives a polished performance with sheer enthusiasm for the script and the role, while the crowded TARDIS crew of Tegan, Nyssa and Adric all get a share of the action. Writer Eric Saward’s lovingly crafted script manages to harken back to Doctor Who’s more traditional roots, whilst at the same time pointing the way forward towards a bright new future for the series.
