DRAGON'S BLOOD TREE

Dracaena draco

A native of the Island of Tenerife in the Canary Islands that gets its common name from the red latex it produces. This latex is mixed with another compound to produce the red lusterous varnish used on violins.

An unusual tree in that it does not commence to branch until after its first flowering and it branches every flowering thereafter. It has been known to live 400 years.

An evergreen tree preferring rich, moist soils in a sunny position. It is drought and frost tender and grows to a height of 20 m with a spread of 4m. The leaves are sword-like in terminal rosettes, the flowers yellowish-white and bell-shaped while the fruit are orange berries.
