Dylis Condell
Watercolor
“The Return of Orpheus”
Offered for sale is this medium sized framed watercolor by the Southern Highlands artist, Dylis Condell. Whilst described in the auction catalogue as a watercolor, I think a fair amount of gouache has been used as well.
Dylis does not feature in any of the standard auction databases, Though a Google search reveals that she is represented in the Solander Gallery, Canberra, as well as the Sturt Gallery in Mittagong and a local high school exhibition (beware, her name is spelt both “Dylis” – which she signs as – as well as “Dilys”). She is best known, currently, for her large colorful tapestries, and has done extensive studies both in Australia and overseas on her tapestries. She apparently paints a picture before the tapestry, and then transfers the image across. Looking at one of the websites below you can see the similar images.
Her brief entry in Max Germaine’s A dictionary of Woman Artists in Australia, Craftsman House, 1991 lists her as
CONDELL, Dilys
Born Newscastle NSW. Painter, sculptor, weaver.
Studies. Claremont Technical College, Perth; Prahran technical College, Melbourne.
Exhibitions. First major show as Sculpture Centre, Sydney, 1979 and recently at Breewood Galleries, Katoomba, 1988, 1989.
There are excellent biographies and a review of her work at the following sites.

In addition, she is listed at www.printmakers.com.au as an established print maker, and on the Art Exhibition Guide.
Hence Dylis seems to be an established artist. This watercolor painting was brought at auction, and at the bottom, is written in pencil “”The Return of Orpheus” and it is signed "Dylis M. Condell". The piece is undated. It is framed in a standard gold frame, under glass, with a simple light cream matte. The Frame size is 52 by 52 cms., the image size is 31 by 31 cms. I can post this around Australia, with Australia Post, securely packaged and wrapped, for $35.00. PayPal is my preferred payment option.
