Edwardian English oak bookcase with carved panels.

This double heighted bookcase would be a handsome feature in a room

as well as being a very useful piece of furniture. 

It is solid oak with pine backboards and shelves.  At the top is a fluted

frieze pediment with a central carved swag.  The doors are glazed with

their original 'wavy' glass.  Inside the bookcase there are three shelves. 

The height of these can be adjusted if desired.  The top of the bookcase

 can be separated for ease of transport.

The main body of the cabinet has a substantial top with lineal carving.

Below this there are two drawers with their original art nouveau handles.

On the bottom are two doors with shaped, bevelled and carved panels.

These are graceful art nouveau plant designs.  Inside the cupboard is a

central shelf.  A plinth base supports the whole structure.

In all it is quite striking in appearance with attractive proportions and the

warm tones and beautiful grain of the of the oak.

CONDITION:  The piece is in good antique condition with the usual marks

expected with age and use.  It has been refinished with traditional shellac. 

PRICE COMPARISON:  The closest visual comparison I have found is a

very similar design listed in "Carter's Price Guide to Antiques in Australasia 2005"

on page 325.  This piece is also Edwardian oak with a fluted pediment, two

glazed doors, two drawers, and two doors with a bevel and carving and a

plinth base.  Height 227cm, width 105cm, depth 48cm.  Price: $3,500 - $4,000.

On page 326 an Edwardian oak bookcase of similar design but no carving is

listed at $5,600 - 5,800.

Carter's price guides are produced annually and are a compilation of actual

retail antique prices in Australia and New Zealand.
