One of a Kind plan of the underground workings at
Broken Hill Proprietary Company Limited
It is Undated but came to me with many other pieces most of which were dated 1887 & 1888.
Since W H Patton was General Manager in 1888 & his name is on the plan it's a reasonable bet that this is from about that date.
A huge ( about 2.5 m long) hand drawn plan of the mine workings. My understanding is that it was a evolving developmental plan of mine progress that was updated on a regular basis as a record of progress.
The shafts drawn in are L to R:- Rasp, No1 Air, Mc Culloch, No2 Air, Patterson, Jamieson, Knox, No 2 Block 11 shaft.
The deepest shaft is Mc Culloch marked @ 322 feet and drawn in a little over that depth.
It's a long time since Broken Hill was only 322 feet deep.
This document is so unique it really deserves to be in a mining Museum or BHP archives?
The Plan is about 2.5 m long and about 1m high, hand inked on paper which is bonded to a light canvas backing it has been rolled up for years so has seen little light. The edges are a bit tattered and the paper has some age yellowing also a couple of 50 mm splits on the R H end, need some conservation tape or fabric strip pasted to the back . Overall it is in good & strong. Could easily be wall mounted and displayed.
