This stunning writing set includes a royal blue feather quill pen with brass decorative detail and a complementary bottle of ink (colour of ink may vary). The quill measures approximately 22cm in length and has been hand-crafted in Florence, Italy. The set comes packaged in an attractive presentation gift box as shown. Perfect for writers or anyone with a passion for writing or history!

A Little History About Writing ...

The first evidence of written language goes back 5000 years to the people of Mesopotamia, Babylon, Egypt and China who used various materials such as clay tablets, wax tablets, papyrus scrolls – some up to 40 metres long – and inks made from pigments derived from plants and other organic sources. The writing implements themselves were made from animal bone, bamboo, and similar materials.

The goose quill which appeared around the 5th and 6th century was introduced by monks and gave rise to the first books of western civilisation. The use of the quill allowed for a cursive adaptable style of writing which in turn gave birth to calligraphy – the art of beautiful writing known to us today. Around the middle of the 18th century the first metal nibs were being produced in England for mass consumption. The development of humankind owes a vast debt to our ability to write and therefore create a lasting repository of human knowledge …
