Description:
A fine watercolour on artist's paper, signed Elliot Etwell and dating circa 1920. Framed - approx 19 X 23 inches (48.26 X 58.42cm).

This is a fine English School watercolour dating from the early C20th period depicting Mary Arden's house.

Mary Arden (c. 1537 – 1608) married John Shakespeare in 1557. giving birth to eight children: William Shakespeare being the third in 1564. She was the daughter of Robert Arden and his first wife, a prominent Warwickshire family and the youngest of eight daughters. She inherited her father's farm, now called Mary Arden's House, when he died in December of 1556.

There is some contoversy as to whether this building is truly the house that Mary Arden inherited but it had been identified as such in the early C18th. This painting beautifully captures it in the eatrly C20th with its stucco'd walls and traditional tiles, the stone wall tidily kept by the unmetalled road
The work is signed Elliot Etwell lower right.
Date:
The picture may date to circa 1920 but it is difficult to be certain.
Framing:
Later plain moulded Gesso work. Finish: Gilt.
Condition:
Good with slight mellowing of colour though still bright. Very minor dust beneath glazing around the mount and minor chipping to frame consistent with age.
