Emanuel Bowen: One of the First Maps of New Holland
New Holland Discovered 1644!
Please note: This chart is a reproduced Limited Edition. It is not the original, which would cost you thousands of dollars.
How much was known about Australia before the charting of the East Coast of our country in 1770 by Captain Cook? Records as early as 1644 indicate considerable knowledge of this continent. As seen from this beautiful Limited Edition, the East Coast was uncharted and what was delineated is relatively accurate
The first map of Australia printed in English was not published until 1744. This was engraved by Emanuel Bowen for the revised edition of John Harris's "Complete Collection of Voyages". With descriptions of New Holland surrounding the charted land mass of the earlier map by Thevenot, in 1644. Melchisedec Thevenot a noted French scientist was the first person to devote a single chart to this great South Land which was puiblished in 1663 for a journal of "Voyages of Discovery'. The size of this fine Limited Edition is 54cm x 64cm.
