About the artist: Born Romain de Tirtoff (called himself Erte after the French pronunciation of his initials), was one of the foremost fashion and stage designers of the early 20th century. From his sensational silver lame costumes complete with pearl wings and ebony plumed cap that he wore to a costume ball in 1914, to his magical and elegant designs for the Broadway musical Stardust in 1988, Erte pursued his career with unflagging zest and creativity for almost 80 years. On his death in 1990 he was hailed as the price of the music hall and a mirror of fashion for 75 years. Born in St. Petersbug to a noble family and destined to a military career by his father, Erte confounded expectations early on when in 1912 he moved to Paris to become a fahion illustrator for Poiret and later Harper's Bazaar where he produced 250 covers for this magazine. Erte is probably best remembered for his glorious and extravagant costumes and stage sets that he designed for the Follies Bergere in Paris and for George White's Scandals in New York., which exploited to the fullest his taste for the exotic, romantic and his keen appreciation for the sinuous and lyrical human figure. Erte also designed for the Opera and traditional theatre and spent a brief, unhappy time working for Louis B. Mayer at MGM in 1925. After a period of obscurity from the 1940s to the 1960s, Erte's characteristic style found a new and enthusiastic market in the late 1960s. The artist responded by creating new series of lithographic prints and sculptures. The death of Erte in 1990 at the age of 97 brought an end to a colorful career of extraordinary brilliance and success.
