The Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers is the creation of Gilbert Shelton and is one of the most popular underground comix ever produced. The first issue of the 14 issue series was first published in 1971. Shelton collaborated on many of the stories with Dave Sheridan and Paul Mavrides.
The Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers (Fat Freddy, Phineas, and Freewheelin’ Franklin) are three hippies whose humorous story lines usually revolve around “scoring some dope” ...and trying to do so without getting busted. Fat Freddy’s Cat is another character of the series and proved so popular he eventually got his own comix (The Adventures Of Fat Freddy’s Cat).
I consider Shelton a master storyteller and artist and one of the best to come from the underground comix scene. Obviously I’m not alone: His epic story, “The Idiots Abroad” (The Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers issues 8, 9, & 10) was voted by The Comics Journal “one of the top 100 comics stories of the century.” (This included all comics - not just undergrounds.)
