On offer is one new replacement 25 tooth cog which regularly fails and is the main cause why odometers stop turning in the above listed dash clusters. Correctly referred to as 'sun' gears their fragile and delicate design mean they only last so long and replacing them is quite common. Original grease used during installation has also added to this problem by causing their teeth to become soft and break off.
A non working odometer is very annoying and affects service intervals, distance travelled, resale value and may even affect your insurance. This cog is a new hard plastic replacement that can save you the hefty repair cost if you choose to do your own repair.
Instrument repairers know the value of these little cogs and the uncertainty they pose for their customers. Most often have limited knowledge about the cause and really how simple a broken odometer is to fix. Therefore the safe option of leaving the car with a qualified repairer will often win over the DIY approach.
It's hard to believe that such a small inexpensive part could cause the odometer to stop working. Because of this repairers refuse to sell these cogs direct to the public or even provide advice as they would rather do the job themselves and charge well for it I might add. I've heard of prices up to $200 and sometimes even more and that's with you removing your own cluster first.
It's almost always the case that failure of this sun gear is the reason why the odometer stops turning. Therefore replacing this one small part can fix it and get it working again. It's really as simple as that. If you're handy, careful and prepared to spend about an hour or so in exchange for saving a heap of money then I suggest that you definitely give this a go.
I've successfully repaired a number of early E Series Ford odometers so with a little patience and ability (dependent on the individual) you could pocket the expensive repair cost yourself rather than paying someone to do it for you.
"Also provided to ensure the greatest chance of success with your repair will be detailed but easy to follow step by step instructions (for EA, EB, ED Series Fords only) to perform the job from start to finish. There's nothing better than to read up first to get an idea of what's involved before doing this type of job to prevent any mishaps from occurring. One or two of the steps can be a little tricky so instructions like these are invaluable and the key to ensuring the best possible outcome for your money"
