Allocasuarina torulosa, known as the Forest Oak, is a handsome, graceful tree up to 15 metres in height with pendulous foliage clumped at the ends to give an open crown. The foliage resembles pine needles, but they have joints; they also have woody cone fruits.

In autumn and winter the fine, drooping branchlets turn a rich burgundy colour, contrasting with the young green foliage and deeply furrowed bark.

The plant has grayish bark, which is longitudinally cracked and corky in appearance.

This is the most common of all Casuarinas, found mainly in forest country on hillsides and mountain slopes.

Allocasuarina torulosa grows best in the warmer areas of Australia, but is worth a try in sheltered microclimates in Adelaide, Melbourne and the mountains.

For sale is a packet of 50 fresh seeds.
