He often drove himself to Gandhi-like asceticism and physical emaciation and seemingly was rescued by his wife's deep belief in the powers of nature cure. A pioneer aviationist, his first Gipsy Moth was a plane in which he immediately began breaking records (a solo flight London to Sydney, Australia) and, at 28, Chichester found himself famous. Later, he entered the map business and became known to many as perhaps the greatest navigator in the world. Following World War II--he served with the R.A.F. but poor eyesight kept him at home, and miserable--his body gave way with a vengeance, but, unwilling to give up or rest, he soon found himself setting out in his Gipsy Moth III yacht, crossing the Atlantic in 40 days. Despite deep familial love, he seemed most alive when alone at sea. The inner challenges which sometimes seem like compulsions--to recover his health through extreme danger and hard work--will no doubt make some readers question their own more timid goals.
