This book is a unique publication. It represents the fruition of many years of travel and study in the extraordinary northern wilderness of Australia, observing and recording the land, its people and their way of life.
Imbuing and adapting the traditional Aboriginal styles of art and incorporating his deep understanding of Aboriginal perceptions of the world, the artist has presented here a personal response to those magnificent landscape and those who live there. It is a record of a journey, a journey of discovery and delight, sometimes of sorrow and despair, but throughout, a journey into one of the world's most beautiful landscapes, home to an ancient people and a stunning diversity of wildlife.
Hodgkinson's concern is with the total experience of Arnhem Land, with the people and their legends, with artforms and artefacts, with natural history and landform, flora and fauna, above all, with the spirit that pervades this unique environment. His viewpoint resembles that of the renaissance, when a spirit of creative exploration and artistic flowering enabled individuals to percieve and record their world in a new light.
This book is the work of a master artist of extraordinary vision.
This large 304 page hardcover is profusely illustrated throughout. The dustjacket has some creases to edge and there are three splits (the longest being approximately 2cm). There is also a cut mark (does not go all the way through dustjacket) running all the way down the front cover - most likely from a stanley knife when opening box. The hardcover underneath is an exact copy of the dustjacket and the dustjacket could be removed if you preferred. Internally it is in an excellent, tight, clean condition. This is a truly magnificant book and a great opportunity to pick up a cheap copy.
Postage quoted is for within Australia only and as this is a large, heavy book overseas customers should email me for a postage quote before bidding. Local pick up is not available.
