It utilises a 2-8k FTT COFDM demodulator system (which is Fully DVB-T compliant : ETS 300-744) as well as lightning fast Hi-Speed USB2.0 port compatibility to display both crystal clear Standard Definition and High Definition Digital Television (SD + HDTV) where available. Some other devices on the market do not support HDTV, and the difference in quality is very noticeable. This device is also far more stable.

Digital TV is not the same as analog TV, this includes reception capability. Some stations like ABC2 in Australia are not available to standard analog tv viewers.. Far from the days of bulky TV tuner cards and big chunky set top boxes, this is a new contender in the Multimedia entertainment industry that is incredibly slim and incredibly powerful. Digital Terrestrial Television, known as DTTV or DTT, is an implementation of digital technology in a great attempt to provide:
1) A larger number of channels (ie: SDTV) ; and or
2) Far higher quality of video output such as EDTV, and High Definition TV(HDTV); and or
3) Higher quality audio such as AC3 or Dolby Digital through conventional antennas and aerials instead of using a satellite dish or cable connection.. The technology varies between countries. Here in Australia and in Europe, the Technology or protocol used is DVB-T . In North America, it is ATSC and ISDB-T in Japan. For the rest of the world or in other countries, it remains largely undecided at undecided. ISDB-T is very similar to Australia/European DVB-T and can share both the front-end receiver as well as the demodulator components.

Compatible Countries

The following table show launches of Digital Terrestrial Television and the closing down of analogue television in most major countries. This device only works with DVB-T services, so unless you are trying to receive channels from other countries using a super antenna, this device probably won't receive anything in the countries using ATSC, DMB, SBTVD, or ISDB-T (marked in red) (*It may/may not work with DVB-S services). As in the chart above, we have heard that many countries, including Australia, are going to phase out analog transmission of major television channels. In other words, analog TV tuners may not be of much use in the near future. This is one of the reasons why this device doesn't receive analog TV, as analog may be relatively unused soon. Also, countries with TV stations still broadcasting in both Analog and Digital generally have lower signal strength for DVB-T, that is untill they go fully digital and push all power to DVB-T; and reception will usually improve as such.)

To our knowledge, most major television broadcasting stations in Australia currently broadcast Free to Air (Free) Digital Terrestrial Television. They include ABC, SBS, NBN, Prime TV, Northern Rivers Television, Seven Digital, The Australian Christian Channel, Channel NSW, Channel 9 and Network 10. You might actually get more channels than your previous non digital Television can receive depending on where you are, which is an added bonus.

The number of channels you can receive is ultimately determined by reception. In our experience, quality of video doesn't drop drastically, but rather cuts off at a threshold when reception is no longer sufficient. This is where this device excels at, unlike some other devices, the ability to connect to far larger and more powerful antennas with significantly greater gain capability means reception is usually not a problem and opens up your selection of channels where available if you have a good antenna to connect it to. You could even use the antenna from a previous television set, or simply connect it to your house's TV antenna port in the wall like you would do with any conventional non digital TV set using the Type 1 antenna provided

What is DVB-T
This product on sale utilises DVB-T. DVB-T is different from DVB-S and DVB-C DVB-H etc...Digital Video Broadcasting, abbreviated as DVB, is a suite of internationally accepted and open standards used for digital television. It is maintained by the DVB project which is an industry consortium with over 270 participating members, published by a joint technical committee of the European Telecommunications Standards Institute, European Committee for Electro technical Standardization, and the European Broadcasting Union.

DVB Systems distribute data by either Satellite (DVB-s & DVB-S2), or Cable (DVB-C), or Terrestrial Television (DVB-T) or Terrestrial Television for handhelds (DVB-H) The distribution systems differ mostly in the modulation scheme used due to technical constraints.

DVB-T (VHF/UHF) uses 16-QAM or 64-QAM (or QPSK) in combination with COFDM

DVB also composes of other content apart from Video and Audio, such as Teletext and Subtitling and Data etc.. Even in countries supporting DVB-T, the Closed Captioning (often referred to as Subtitles) and Teletext features may or may not work due to different transmission compatibility issues, and the regulations of each country. For example in Australia, closed captioning may only be active for certain time periods on certain channels, so when you purchase this device please assume there won't be any subtitles with your device, even if they are officially available.

DVB-T was ratified in early 1997 and the first commercial DVB-T broadcasts were performed by the UK in 1998. DVB-T is used in many countries.

What does Terrestrial mean in DVB-Terrestrial
Terrestrial is an indication of how TV or radio signals are received. Terrestrial means such signals are received through a conventional aerial or antenna. In this case, it is Digital Television. Digital TV / Digital Radio can be received by cable (DVB-C) or Satellite(DVB-S /DVB-S2) and Terrestrial (DVB-T). This device uses DVB-T

What is HDTV (High Definition TV)
Video Component
The Video Component of HDTV is relatively part of the Digital Television (DTV) specifications and has many different video resolutions. The two main resolutions to be concerned about are 720p and 1080i. The "p" means progressive and "i" mean interlaced. In both resolutions, every second has 60 frames of video. Progressive resolution puts 60 full frames on the screen every second. Interlaced resolution puts 30 frames of only odd lines and then 30 frames of only even lines up every second. Some people complain about the flicker produced by interlaced video. The 720p video resolution is 1280 X 720 pixels, which gives 921,600 total pixels and the 1080i video resolution is 1920 X 1080, which gives 2,073,000 pixels. Which resolution is better? Some people like the slightly more "stable" picture of 720p, while others prefer the greater resolution of 1080i.

Sound Component
HDTV's Digital Audio signal generally sounds better than a standard non digital television's analog sound. As some HDTV programs include Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound, you can experience an improved immersive experience if you have 5.1 speakers to take advantage of it.

To ensure this product actually works in Australia, our staff actually use and test the device so we can help you with problems. You can use the quick start guide that came with the manufacturer if you wish. Some may find the quick start guide confusing, so we compiled the following instructions, which is a log of exactly what we did to get it running on our systems.

First, have a look at the instructions on the user manual just in case.

Basically you insert the DVB-T tuner device into a free USB2.0 port, insert your CD Rom, let windows search for the software for it, and install it.

Then install Kworld Hyper media centre from the CD Rom, run it, and it will guide you through the configuration, which is basically 1) Select type of Tuner (Select Digital TV), 2) Select your location (Australia, USA etc. wherever you are), then 3) Scan channels. 4) once scan completes, press the "next" button. 5) Screen says "Setting OK", click on "Finish" 6) You arrive back on the main screen. 7) All done!

Now for example, to watch TV starting out from the main screen, select "TV" on the main menu, and you will go to the TV screen. To change a channel, select "Channel List" (pretty simple isn't it?), to see what's on that particular channel you are watching, select EPG (Electronic program guide).

Go to the settings window to change aspect ratio, brightness and contrast etc..

When your done, double click on the TV image to view it in full screen. Double click on it again to exit full screen.

To record what you are watching immediately, just click on the red circular button at the bottom control panel. It will automatically record your video to your "MY DOCUMENTS" folder

You can also record by schedule. If you are doing it for the first time, simply select "schedule" from the TV menu, then select " New schedule" and then choose a channel to record, when to start, when to end and that's basically it ! The program will run in the background and record your selected channel from the start time to the end time (based on your computer system clock). The storage folder is also your "My Documents" Folder.

Note: The software is set to record at maximum quality every time. Software updates occur frequently by the manufacturer and you may be available to download newer versions for free.

Hints and Tips:
- Switch to Full Screen by double clicking anywhere on the window that displays the video you are watching. Double click again to exit full screen..
- Lost? To return to the main menu at any time, click on the GREEN Home (House) Button at the top left corner of the program window.
- To go back one step, click on the blue arrow button at the top left corner of the program window.
- Hover your mouse pointer over any button on the control panel at the bottom to see its features.
- Avoid moving the mouse while watching video as it might drain processor power
- To effectively use Teletext, the best way is to activate window mode (press the window mode button at the bottom of the screen which looks like 4 arrows pointing to the centre, its the last button on the control panel), then when you are in window mode, activate teletext (The Tx Button). 5 new black coloured buttons will appear at the top, and on the right, there will be a Space with the word "GO" in it, just type the page number into this space and press enter to load the page..

Our opinion about its features

This model is one of the best DVB-T receivers for the computer that we have sampled in terms of size and quality. The manufacturer is an established company and are professionals in the DVB-T consumer market, and have won numerous awards.

We chose Kworld as their product range matched the feedback received from our buyers- mainly the ease of installation, use and stability and performance. Our trial of their newest models of DVB-T receiver satisfied all our requirements. Installation was the easiest amongst all the models we tested, and the software was the easiest to understand and the easiest to use. The device was over 80% more stable than other models and 40% more stable compared to the 380U which debuted a few years ago (this is the 380UR - 2nd revision which isn't displayed on the case, but can be confirmed if you ask the manufacturer).

The best part was that we could install it on more than one computer (as long as we used it for this Kworld device). Other software often gets bogged down by CD Keys and forgotten serial numbers which can be a real headache.

Although there are many similar models that are also just as good initially, Several models that we sampled before may not run on windows vista with their drivers or are unstable on vista or come with complicated software and were unstable after a few hours of use. This device didn't have these problems. It was one of the most stable DVB-T Tuners we ever sampled, mostly caused by the improved circuit design which now includes a stable infrared remote control system.

By connecting the device directly to our building's aerial port, we could receive around 26 channels (even duplicate broadcasts from the some stations on different channels eg: 7 Digital 1, 2, 3 etc).

The small bundled antenna is, by matter of fact of small antennas, not very powerful simply because it is small- This is to be expected in all small antennas that we know of and is not something we, you, nor the manufacturer can do anything about unless you buy a bigger antenna or reposition it where there is reception. Reception depends heavily on your local broadcasting station's broadcasting power and moving the antenna to an area of good reception.

The bundled software is a major factor. It is feature packed and the quality of output is very very good. It is really high quality HDTV video and audio. It uses significant processing power, ensuring greater device stability than other models which try to cut back on processing speed, making videos appear jerky at times, even if reception is good. The powerful video editing software really gives new meaning to digital recordings, allowin you to edit out advertisments and even insert your own video footage before burnign them to state of the art Blue-Ray / DVD /VCD Discs etc.. The software also allows you to export the video as an AVI file and upload your videos to videosharing websites like youtube (please comply with all applicable laws).

In all, it works very well. Poor reception through a small antenna or while running other programs in the background may cause the display to lag. Overall, we have no complaints with this device at all. It works flawlessly for us (when connected to a larger antenna on our roof).
