Therapeutic Benefits§ Relief of menopausal symptoms About the IngredientsVitex Agnus Castus is one of the most important herbs used today for the management of female hormonal disorders. Vitex – also known, as Chaste Berry, is the fruit of a Mediterranean shrub. A recent study concluded that Vitex is effective in the treatment of pre-menstrual syndrome. Over half the women tested in the double blind study experienced relief from their symptoms. Tested variables included irritability, mood alteration, headaches, anger, breast fullness and bloating. Vitex has been found beneficial in amenorrhoea or to normalise hormones after either withdrawing from the oral contraceptive pill or during menopause. It also has a reputation as an aphrodisiac. Vitex has also been shown to correct progesterone deficiency, which is the frequent cause of menopausal and pre-menstrual related symptoms. Progesterone deficiency is associated with symptoms such as, pre-menstrual syndrome (PMS), osteoporosis, fibrocystic breasts, ovarian cysts, endometriosis, uterine fibroids and post-natal depression. Black Cohosh is a popular alternative to prescription hormonal therapy for treatment of menopausal symptoms such as hot flashes, mood problems, perspiration, heart palpitations and vaginal dryness. The American Indians traditionally used Black Cohosh to treat female complaints. It is now known to decrease the level of Luteinizing Hormone (LH), which is thought to be one of the causes of hot flushes. Black Cohosh is also used for its ability to relieve symptoms such as, anxiety and depression, and has been shown to offer relief of menopausal and pre-menstrual syndromes, with minimal side effects and low toxicity. When combined with Vitex Agnus Castus, it works well to rebalance hormones after withdrawing from the oral contraceptive pill (OCP). Red clover has also been studied extensively, and has been reported to specifically reduce premenstrual breast pain. Phytoestrogens such as Red Clover show oestrogen-like and oestrogen-opposing actions, depending on the bodies’ natural oestrogen levels, correcting imbalanced levels of the hormone. Evening Primrose Oil (EPO) is rich in a particular type of essential fatty acids – Gamma Linoleic Acid (GLA). GLA is used to encourage the production of prostaglandins, which are capable of influencing hormone production and function. EPO is known to improve symptoms such as headaches, irritability, bloating and breast tenderness and pain. Its actions include anti inflammatory, antiplatelet and vasodilatory properties. Starflower Oil, also known as Borage Oil is a rich plant source of GLA – a precursor of prostaglandins. This ingredient makes it useful in cases of depression and PMT. Dong Quai is most effective when used in combination with other supporting herbs. Dong Quai is capable of increasing oestrogenic activity and is specifically recommended for relieving uterine and ovarian cramping. Wild Yam was once used as the sole source of chemicals for the manufacture of the oral contraceptive pill. It is now known that Wild Yam contains steroidal saponins including dioscrine, phytosterols, alkaloids, tannins and starch. These constituents do contain steroid precursors but not specifically progesterone, as was once thought. More recent research has shown Wild Yam can ease dysmenorrhea and ovarian and uterine pains. It is beneficial in reducing premenstrual cramping and for soothing nerves. There have been two vitamins added to this formula to make it a complete formula for women - Vitamin B12 (Cyanocobalamin) and Folic acid. These ingredients work together to regulate the formation of Red Blood cells and enhance the utilization of iron. Femoline Complete is a complete formula for women of all ages.
