This lovely dowry or marriage sheet is made from fine white French cotton or metis, a blend of cotton and linen. As I am not completely sure if it is fine metis or fine cotton, to be on the safe side I am stating cotton.
It has a centre seam showing that it was made before 1908 when the narrow looms were replaced in this area of France. The seam is handsewn with tiny stitches, and flat to the touch - completely unnoticeable when lain upon!
The simple monogram is handworked in a raised white silk stitch.
Colour: Snowy white
Dimensions of sheet: 154cm wide x 264cm long, or 60" x 104"
Dimensions of monogram: 15cm x 10cm or 6"x4"
Condition: Very good, lovingly used.
This sheet would have been part of the bride's 'trousseau' or dowry linen with both the bride and groom's initials embroidered onto the linen. Some of the trousseau the bride would have made herself, others would have been given as wedding presents.
As with all my linens they are freshly washed, so ready to use, but there may be the odd storage mark that has remained.

Most of the items that I list will be vintage or used, so may show signs of their previous history, which is the whole charm of these pre-loved items. If you are looking for a pristine, unused item, then my finds are probably not for you.
I do my best to describe their condition accurately. Generally I find that these items have been cherished possessions at a time when people did not live in such a throwaway society, so they made things to last, and took care of them.
