GLENELG SKETCHBOOK

Hard to Find Out of Print Book

Drawings by Jeanette McLeord, Text by Ian Mudie

Glenelg is the oldest settlement in South Australia after Kangaroo Island. Its colourful history began when Captain Hindmarsh, standing by the tree which is now preserved as the Old Gum Tree, proclaimed the Province of South Australia on 28 December 1836. The seaside township developed fast and became a flavoured suburb of Adelaide, especially after the trams once known as "the best in the world" made communication fast and easy. Holidaymakers thronged to its wide firm beaches, to the ketty, and to its other attractions. They were catered for by fine hotels, while prosperous businessmen and politicians built their mansions at "the Bay" and joined the elgant evening promenades. The homes of some of them have now become schools and other institutions. Humbler folk lived in cottages of which many still survive, and Glenelg's popularity increased when the Anzac Highway was completed in the 1930s. In this book Iam Mudie tells the story of Glenelg in a lively text highlighted with many human interest anecdotes and it is illustrated by Jeanette McLeord in the same style which proved so popular in her other Sketchbooks.
