John Halder is a German literature professor in the 1930s who is reluctant at first to accept the ideas of the Nazi Party.  Pulled in different emotional directions by not only his wife, but by his mother, his mistress and his Jewish friend, eventually Halder fives in to nazism and becomes employed by the Party.  As he moves up the Nazi ranks, his seemingly inconsequential decisions potentially jeopardize the people in his life with devastating effects . . . .
