A personal account of a residence in Guernsey by an observant and lucid visitor preserves a living picture of the state of the island and its inhabitants at the time of the visits.  This monograph presents an edited account of two holidays enjoyed here, by English visitors, in Queen Victoria's reign.  The first is by an unidentified woman from Devon, who, with her family, visited Guernsey in the summer of 1844 and resided there for several weeks.  Her description was first published in 1847 under the title The Channel Islands or a Peep at our Neighbours.  The second account, by E.T. Gastineau, first published in 1860, was entitled A Hobble through the Channel Islands in 1858.

This monograph will, the editor hopes, give the modern visitor pleasure in reading of the hospitality that Guernsey afforded the Victorian seeker after sun, quiet, and rest, and which, from these two descriptions here printed, were abundantly found.

This small 28 page softcover measures approximately 11cm x 19cm and has 12 black and white illustrations.  There are some light brown marks to cover (including one at bottom of front cover), but it is otherwise in a very good, tight, clean condition inside and out.   An interesting read and a great collectible!
