| Off the Bookshelf. For your consideration 'GIBBON'S ROMAN EMPIRE' in Five Volumes The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire by Edward Gibbon, Esq., With notes by The Rev. H.H. Milman. A beautiful 5 volume set of Gibbon's Great Work, an indispensable resource for the student of the classics Published by Thomas Y. Crowell & Company New York There is no date but they appear to be from the early 1900s Hard cover with maroon/red 2/3 cloth boards and 1/3rd leather boards the leather wraps around to form the spine. Gilt title and author lettering on the spine along with a lovely gilded floral design. All volumes have tissue protected frontispieces with a loose protective paper in between to protect the tissue and 2 or 3 photographic full page illustrations including Pompeii, Hadrian's Tomb, Memphis and the amazing Hannibal crossing the Rhone with his ELEPHANTS. The top edge is gilded and the sides trimmed. Measures 8.25" x 5.75" A unique good tight copy of this set in very good condition . Don't think they were ever used Issues - Maroon cloth is faded in some spots, - Vol 5 spine top has a torn piece which is included. - Very little wear to corners, edges and spine ends . - Small signs of glue residue on front endpapers where name plate was A great addition to your library.
