Alice Downs cattle station, north of Hall's Creek, in the Kimberley region of Western Australia, is the setting, and Gordon depict a small part his country, Margoombaray.
Also known as ‘Robin's Soak’, the wetlands, in yellow, are adjacent to the tiny community of Chinaman's Gardens, and are formed when the Panton River overflows it's banks. Also seen are some of the brown limestone ridges that traverse the vast rolling hills.

Gordon was born on the small Community of Chinaman’s Garden, just north of Hall’s Creek, in the East Kimberley region of Western Australia.
It did not take him long to learn the necessary skills to become head ringer on the
adjacent Cattle Station, Alice Downs.
He also worked as a contract musterer on many neighbouring properties, including Moola Bulla, Mabel and Texas Downs and Springvale, and settled in to the fledgling community at Turkey Creek / Warmun, after the stockmen’s dispute, and met his wife, the renowned artist, Shirley Purdie.
The family was granted a parcel of land on Shirley’s homelands, Violet Valley, on Mabel Downs, and they and their families relish the opportunity to experience the bush life again.
