Title: "Gouldian Finch in Clover " ARTIST'S STATEMENT Australian backyards are hosts to many amazing native and introduced bird species. I am lucky enough to have a few natives that frequent my yard and neighbourhood. This image is from a series of paintings which explores species observed at or near my home in the Hunter Valley on the eastern coast of Australia. Unlike many bird illustrations the characters portrayed in these paintings have been presented within a scene. Adding to the personal nature of the image and to its story telling capabilities, the viewer is invited to become an un-intrusive part of the birds environment. This is a portrait of a Gouldian Finch in flowering clover. The Gouldian Finch, Erythrura gouldiae (or Chloebia gouldiae), also known as the Lady Gouldian Finch or Gould's Finch, is a colourful bird native to northern Australia. Recent years has shown a decline in the numbers of this nomadic wild bird. Unfortunately I live too far south to experience this bird in the wild but it is the second most domesticated Australian finch, which has three naturally occurring colour variations but literally hundreds of domesticated colour variations throughout the world. Perhaps, sadly, I will have to be content to experience it as a domesticated breed.
