Description: An excellent townscape watercolour on artist's paper dating circa 1890 - 1910, framed - approx 26 X 21 inches (66.04 X 53.34cm). This is an excellent English School watercolour dating from the Victorian period. The townscape depicts a classic late 19th early 20th Century Grand Tour study of the magnificent medieval buildings of Bruges in Belgium. To the foreground the market place is busy, figures in colourful dress, the women wearing long aprons and bonnets, going about their business, fruit sellers to the right, the old cobbled streets leading to the canal where large barges make their way downstream. The painting is flanked by the tall multi-storied timber framed buildings of thetown, decked with flags and window boxes, smoke emanating from the chimney pots. Standing tall is the famous landmark of "The Belfry" towering over the city with birds flying above in a blue clouded sky. A beautiful study, full of life and colour with wondeful perspective.
Date: The watercolour probably dates to around 1890 - 1910.
Framing: Later classic scroll and floral moulded Gesso work. Finish: Gilt. The watercolour is mounted on board and has a off-white mount.
Condition: The painting retains excellent colouring with no major marks or blemishes. The later frame has a few cracks, dings and chips consistent with age, but generally in good condition having a wonderful antiqued finish.
