How does a Grey Card work? Why do I need a Grey Card?
Your cameras light meter will attempt to control the exposure of your shot such that the scene best resembles an average light reflectance of about 17%. This is why you end up with a grey image if you photograph a white surface. The camera does not know to express the image as white, as you see it, it exposes to produce a roughly 17% grey image. Why is this important? Different exposures will each produce a different colour balance. This is critical especially in portrait photography, or any work where you particularly desire accurate colour replication. The best method to obtain the most accurate colour replication is to photograph the grey card in the same light as your subject will be taken in. Most digital SLR cameras have a colour balance preset option, whereby your colour balance will be determined by the exposure taken of your grey card.
1)In this first image the car is photographed using the cameras auto setting for colour balance. No post shoot digital manipulation has been used in these images other than resize and sharpen.
2)The grey card is situated in the same light as the subject and photographed such that only the grey card is exposed.
3)In this next image the car is photographed using the colour balance preset shot of the Grey Card. Notice the colour alteration. This better reflects the true colour in this given light.
Depending on the scene and the light at the time the difference may be subtle or extreme. In this case it was quite overcast, the cameras auto setting did quite a good job, but the grey card managed to tweak the colour balance just enough to improve the accuracy of replication.

The preset setting is quite better, as the cars paint does not have the hint of green as seen in the cameras auto setting. The blue is far more accurate.
The opposite side of the Grey Card has a 90% reflectance surface. This surface will enable you to determine what exposure will give you an accurate replication of about 90% reflectance. This is important as highlights blow out or lose detail past about 90%.
