Description:
This is an amazing genuine handwoven rug in natural sheep wool rich in design and colours made by artist Gerardo Fernandez from Ayacucho.
Gerardo like most of Ayacucho weavers, is inspired by his ancestors culture and symbols to weave his rugs, specially the WARI CULTURE(*) who inhabited Ayacucho way before the Incas conquered it in the 1400s.
Making an Ayacucho rug is a long process as some weavers prefer to spin their own sheep wool. All Ayacucho weavers dye their own wool with natural dyes but occasionaly will use commercial sheep wool and synthetic dyes if they need a special colour.
This rug has been woven "row by row" and has taken around 25-30 days to be completed. It has a geometrical design enhanced with ancient Wari masks and insects. Ancient Peruvian cultures often depict nature in their pottery and textiles.
Many customers opt for using these rugs as wall features as they say the our rugs are "too beautiful to be stepped on!".
This rug is "double sided". You will not know what side is the front or the back.
It comes SIGNED by the artist. "SUMAC" means "beautiful" in Quechua the language of the Inca and one still spoken in the Andes.
These gorgeous rugs retail for about $US800 or more in Peru. Here you can get them at a more affordable price because it comes direct from Gerardo.

(*) About the Wari Culture:
The Wari Culture developed in the present Ayacucho Region around 500 AD approximately. It appeared as a result of influence from Tiahuanaco and Nazca. It featured the construction of a number of pre-planned cities. This was the first Andean empire, controlling a wide territory through the setting up of regional administrative centers and a road network. It was the precedent on which the organization of the Inca Empire was based. Its capital, in the Ayacucho Region, was the citadel of Wari.
Supporting the Ayacucho weavers:
When you buy an Ayacucho rug from us, you are supporting the artists who still carry on the traditional art of rug weaving in Ayacucho, a town hardly visited by tourists. These Ayacucho weavers are tired of big companies taking their rugs on consignment at low prices but due to the lack of opportunities for sales, they accept these unfair conditions and wonder how long they will be able to keep doing what they love to do, the art of weaving, without getting a fair price for all their work.
Peru Art Australia, my business, supports Fair Trade practices with the Ayacucho weavers by paying them a fair price for their work and treating them with respect. All our weavers have already been paid for their rugs and tapestries. We enjoy visiting them at their homes and workshops in Ayacucho, we enjoy an excellent business relationship with them and several of the weavers have become very good friends. You are welcome to read about our trips to the Andes in my blog The Loom.
