DESCRIPTION:
Dutch battle sludge! This is the latest album from Heavy Lord, that megaheavy doom behemoth who released another disc on Solitude in 2006 that got a lot of play over here. They don't expand on the style with any needless experimentation, they just combine a bunch of different elements of doom and stoner rock into an ultraheavy, rocking concoction of tectonic metal. Mash together High On Fire, Black Album-album Metallica, Crowbar, and Electric Wizard and you get Heavy Lord. The opening title track is pure New Orleans stomp, a chugging negatory anthem that reminds me of Crowbar with it's heaving pounding detuned riffage and bellowing vocals that slows to a skullcrushing creep in the second half, alternating it's sludgy heaviness with an almost fragile melodic arpeggio. "Serpento" drags even further into the mud, fusing swampy sludge with awesome choked screams and low-flying guitar harmonies that sound like Maiden melted down into a leaden drip. The rest of the album is chock full of bludgeoning quarter-speed thrash metal riffs, killer NWOBHM style guitar harmonies, bloozy leads, and a varied vocal style that keeps shifting from those gutteral Crowbar-esque screams to hushed whispering and anguished crooning. The longer tracks on Chained are where the band goes for a more atmospheric approach, like on the ten-minute epics "Maelstrom" and the aptly named "Eternal Crawl"; on these songs, the glacial blues riffs unfold lugubriously, becoming trance inducing dirges that at times sounds like a New Orleans version of Pelican or some other contempo instrumental metal outfit, at least until the roaring barbarian chants show up later on in the song. Punishing, thunderous sludge!
