Bound in a luxury white leather look boards with leather spine: a fine copy. The 15 ills. depicting a.o. the 17th century ships Heemskerck and Zeehaen and navigational instruments, all by G.C. Ingleton. Beautifully handprinted by J.T. Kirtley in red, brown and black on handmade paper, in 85 numbered copies signed in pen by the author and the illustrator, this copy one of 75 copies on Georgian semi-rag paper, numbered 51. The book was published in memory of the cartographer, artist and historian James Emery. The VOC-ship Heemskerck was commanded by Abel Tasman (Lutjegast 1603- Batavia 1659), who travelled with this ship and the Zeehaen around Australia in 1642-1643. On this journey, his first, he discovered Mauritius, Tasmania, New Zealand and Tonga. The edition was originally divided into 2 issues according to the book it self 1- 10 on Arnold's and 11 to 85 on Georgian paper. Michael Treloar antiquarian speaks of even three issues: copies 1-10, on Arnold's handmade paper (and generally not for sale); copies 36-85, the standard issue, on Georgian semi-rag paper, and signed by the author and the artist; and copies 11-35, the special issue, also on Georgian, but with extra colouring on the map and the added signature of the printer, John T. Kirtley: the total issued, however, was much lower. It is generally considered to be among the finest pieces of hand-printing ever done in Australia Fitzgerald's epic poem, printed in black and red, complemented by Ingleton's illustrations printed in red or auburn, and composed by Kirtley in an effort that virtually finished him.
Personally I bought this book for one reason: the absolutely beautiful map of Abel Tasman. Just immagion the size of it: it takes two pages of this huge folio!
