HISTORIC PLACES OF AUSTRALIA
Volume Two
Hard to Find Out of Print Beautiful Coffee Table Book by Australian Council of National Trusts
This volume is the sixth in the series Historic Buildings of Australia published in conjunction with the Australian Council of National Trusts. It continues the survey of places of historical and architectural importance which started with the publication of Historic Places of Australia Volume One in 1978. The chapters in this new volume provide yet more evidence of the great diversity of archtiectural styles and the variety of types of settlement and land use that have existed throughout Australia's history.
The places described and illustrated include among others: Goulburn, Grafton, Paddington and Balmain (NSW); Williamstown, St James Park and Portland (VIC); Cooktown and Barcaldine (QLD); Bothwell and Longford (TAS); Hahndorf and Strathalbyn (SA); Albany and Rottnest Island (WA).
Of particular interest, and special relevance in the context of this volume, are the chapters on Maldon, Victoria, classified in 1965 as Australia's first notable town, and on the Arltunga Mine and the Hermannsburg Mission in the Northern Territory, where the National Trust has been increasingly active in recent years. Developments such as these demonstrate the ever increasing awareness of the need to preserve the many fascinating and often unique elements of Australia's cultural heritage.
