HM Williamson & Sons Cup, Saucer & Plate (Trio) c 1905
Antique Cup, Saucer & Plate c 1905 by H M Williamson and Sons
This delightful set in the Prince pattern is in excellent condition, particularly considering its age. It is free of chips, nicks, cracks, crazing and discolouration and is beautifully decorated with pink roses and touches of aqua and green, and bright edge gilding.
All three pieces have a scalloped edge and a finely reeded or fluted band. The shape of the cup seems to take its influence from early Wileman Foley, or maybe it is the other way round?
The procelain itself is very delicate.
The plates and saucers have the Williamson backstamp for the period and the name of the pattern, "Prince". The cup has the number 9552 only.
This is a small teacup, measuring 7 cm across the rim and standing 6.5 cm high. The saucer is just under 14 cm and the plate 16.5 cm.
I have been unable to find any additional information about this pattern. There is very little material on this manufacturer but some time ago I contacted another ebayer in England who was selling a Williamson piece. She turned out to be H M Wiliamson's great great grand-daughter, and she confirmed what I already knew, that there was very little recorded material. She told me the pottery records had not been kept, and she knew nothing about the Prince pattern, but given the pattern number, 9552, she estimated it dated to just after the turn of the century.
This pottery was established at Longton in 1879 and went on to make the better known Heathcote China. Operations ceased in the late 1940s.
But regardless of this dearth of information, it is a delicate and beautiful set that looks lovely on display.
