HOLMEGAARD PER LUTKEN GLASS VASE SIGNED ca1969 RARE
We all know the feeling; you come across a piece of glass that has that feel about it. You know that it's quality, looks vaguely familiar, polished pontil and no signature. What do you do? You buy it anyway and hope that you can look it up somewhere. This piece was like that. Fluf knew this was good, but what is it? Fluf looked and looked and couldn't find one anywhere. Not in Flufs big glass library, not on the net, nowhere nothing zip.
So after a year and a half, Fluf thought enough was enough and decided to put it up for auction without knowing what it was (and Fluf hates to do that!!!). But while photographing the bottom to show the polished pontil, Fluf sees something through the camera. Some numbers! Now, Fluf has looked at this piece from every angle you can think of and never ever saw the signature. But there it was. OK, slightly obscured by the age wear, but how could Fluf have missed it? Just goes to show ya, never give up!
Here's the good part. This piece does show up in Flufs library, but not in a photo. In the back of the book, "Glass Is Life", about the life of Per Lutken, one of the 20th century's greatest glass designers, there is a section called, "My Black Book", which is a reproduction of the drawings and dates of all the glass pieces that he designed from 1942 until his retirement in 1986. And there, dated 1969 is a sketch of this piece. It's always a joy to find a less well known piece from one of the great masters! It's 10cm/4" tall and is 14cm/5.5" in diameter. It has a wide bell rim and the sides balloon out to the mid way of the body. It then is pinched in with vertical lines running down to the base. No chips or scratches.
Excellent condition.
