WHY IS MY LOCO SO SLOW ?

Having bought a new loco for your Hornby Dublo layout you find that it moves slowly and can't pull for toffee. So you clean it and oil it (sparingly) and it is still sluggish ! (I know because I have been there !). So what next ? The traditional way is to send it off to a specialist to have the armature rewound and the motor re-magnetised - all at great cost. Why not try a new neo magnet ? The problem is that the old magnet has deteriorated in the 40 or more years of its life - and may have had its pole pieces pulled away destroying its strength even further. It is claimed that neo magnets are 10 times stronger than the old ones - they are very hard to pull apart and fly together from great distances (beware, they can shatter or pinch your skin!). Increasing the magnetic field not only makes the motor go faster and have more torque but also reduces the power consumption - thus reducing the risk of overheating and motor burnout. I have neo magnets fitted to all my engines now and the difference is amazing.

WILL THIS MAGNET FIT MY LOCO ?

This particular magnet fits snuggly between the pole pieces of the Dublo BoBo diesel - 3/8" cube. 

It will also fit the Tanks, A4s and Duchesses (all the upright motors) - they usually take  a 3/8" x 3/8" x 1/2" size - however one of my magnets will fit between the pole pieces - but it leaves a small gap - this can be left blank, filled with a bit of scrap metal or padded both sides with a piece of card or plastic (I prefer to leave a gap on one side). The magnetic field is so strong that the gap does not seem to matter. See photo. I have installed these magnets in many of my own locos with a dramatic increase in their performance, the magnets are so strong that the gap makes little difference. 

WHAT MOTORS IT WILL NOT FIT !

8fs and Castles usually need a rectangular magnet with a groove to accomodate the screw. Ringfield motors, as in the CoCo, CoBo, shunter, emu, and Westcountry, take a ring shaped magnet. It does not have a hole drilled through the middle, so it is not suitable for Triang type motors. I do not have any magnets other than the 3/8" cube - and certainly this will not replace a ringfield 'doughnut' - sorry. One customer has purchased over 20 of these magnets and has used them successfully in most of his HD locos.  Why not try one now and be amazed by the enhanced performance ?

HOW DO I REPLACE THE MAGNET ?

Picture shows a BoBo motor bogie on the right - it is really only a 2 minute job to fit a new magnet - just take off the body shell, unscrew the chassis and bracket from the motor, loosen the top nut and bolt holding the magnet and prise it out - then slot the new magnet in and reassemble. The magnet has two opposing surfaces which are the powerful poles (and can be easily identified) and these should attach themselves to the metal 'pole pieces'. If the engine moves the opposite direction to that expected or just buzzes then turn the magnet round.

Fitting in an upright motor is just as easy, picture shows a Duchess with spacers fitted (on the left) and an N2 with a gap (in the middle), both work well - remove the body from the chassis, unscrew the large nut and bolt holding the pole pieces, lever out the old magnet and replace with the new neo magnet (inserting small pieces of card, plastic or metal to fill the gap if you prefer), test run to make sure the magnet is the right way round and reassemble. Simple as that !
