Presented here for consideration is a MAGNIFICENT Carlton Ware Jar & Cover hand decorated with the New Mikado motif. The decoration on this large & prestigious Jar & Cover vase is just superb; my humble photos could never do this art work justice. The New Mikado pattern is one of Carlton Ware Chinoiserie school of patterns that where first introduced in 1915.

This particular version of this is pattern number 2814, this pattern is one of the rarer examples of this very popular pattern. The gilding is applied over glaze but much of the colour of the pattern - the green, cream and red – is under the glaze.

The ground is vibrant cobalt. The inside of this outstanding vase is finished in a glorious mother of pearl lustre. The pattern number is “2814” printed by hand on the base in black paint. It also has the black stamped Wiltshire and Robison maker’s mark stamped in black ink under the glaze.

This mark was in use from 1894 until 1927. The pattern number “2814” was introduced into service circa in 1923. This means we have a production window of from 1923 until 1927.

Dimensions
This large and prestigious vase strides in at a very impressive 29 cm (11.5”) tall and it has a diameter of 15 cm (6”) at its broadest.

Condition

It is in EXCELLENT condition; there are no chips, cracks or repairs and NO crazing. There is no wear to the magnificent cobalt blue lustre ground and NO wear to the hand painted motif. There is some wear to the gilding around the mouth rim, this is not obvious when the jar is on display as it is hidden by the cover.

Some of the fine fillagree around the base rim is also missing, I belive that this is a production flaw from the time of manufacture (see photo below) - I only really mention this production flaw for complete accuracy.

This is a very collectable pattern on a bold and striking colour-way. Everything about this Jar and the Cover just shriek quality, from the pattern to the shape and the vintage, this is a prominent piece of early twentieth century art.
