From Cambodia, this image of the Buddha
is hand painted in lacquer on a wood panel in a very meticulous and time
consuming process. First a base coat is applied to prepare the surface and then
layer upon layer of lacquer is added to the wood panel. Colour is added using
natural pigments taken from local plant extracts and finally the gold gilding
takes place. The surface of the detailed sections of this painting are
textured. The surface of the other parts is perfectly smooth. The art of working in
lacquer was lost in Cambodia for some time but is experiencing a revival among
Cambodian artisans today as they put the tumultuous days of the Khmer Rouge
behind them. The Buddha sits
serenely in the lotus position with his right hand held in the Teaching Mudra, known
in Sanskrit as the Jnana Mudra, with the thumb and index finger forming a
circle at their tips. This denotes the setting in motion of the Wheel of the
Teaching of the Dharma. A flower in the palm of the right hand symbolises
purity. The Buddha is framed by the Bodhi tree under which he sat until
realizing enlightenment or complete 'awakening'. This panel was created
by a talented artist in Siem Reap, requiring long hours and great patience. The
panel sits on a quality wooden stand which is included and also has a hook on
the back for hanging on the wall. Google
