This is a wonderful handwoven "mudcloth" piece of fabric from Mali in West Africa. Traditionally these pieces are handwoven in thin strips by the men, then pieced together end to end and decorated by the women, applying up to seven layers of dye by hand using a brush. The piece is washed between each application of dye to remove any excess and this achieves the brilliant tribal design you can see in the picture.

This piece measures around 170cm long by 125cm wide.It can be used as a shawl, a wall hanging, a table runner or just as a throw on furniture as the design quality of this piece is so original.
