This natural coloured hemp yarn is made from fibres harvested from a relative of the banana tree, that occurs naturally in the wild of the Himalayas, and has been used for centuries by the people of Nepal for ropes, netting, baskets, knitted products and anything that requires a strong material and will stand up to hard wear. In its finer form we know it as banana silk. Use it for binding books or leather items, dye it with cotton dyes to make colourful harnesses and leads or jewellery, this yarn becomes softer with use, just like linen so it has many end uses.
Hemp is a natural moth repellent and is often used in Nepal for backing wool carpets. It can be used as a carry yarn for sari silk, and used to knit or crochet bags, cushion covers, and anywhere that needs to be hardwearing.
Each skein is approximately 100 grams in weight, and about 180 metres in length. Hemp yarn has a slightly more yellow hue than nettle yarn, and feels a bit harder to the touch.
This yarn is handspun on charkhas by women's groups in Nepal, and thus provides an essential additional income to support and improve their family's earnings
