HONITON LACE PATTERNS

Honiton lace's popularity as a craft is continually growing, and now Elsie Luxton, author of the highly acclaimed first ever handbook on the subject. has compiled a second volume, providing further scope for those who have already mastered the basic techniques.

Although this is a book aimed at the initiated, the opening chapter gives patterns for. those who do not have great experience of Honiton lacemaking; basic instructions for fillings, leaves and general techniques given in The Technique of Honiton Lace are set out here again and elaborated. The author covers flat patterns, edgings, handkerchief corners, small motifs and raised and rolled work- 71 patterns in all -incorporating traditional Devon designs with her own patterns and techniques, as well as drawing inspiration from the world of animals and plants.

One of the great attractions of Honiton lace is its versatility, and although the author often gives specific numbers of pairs of bobbins to be used, different effects can be achieved by varying the threads and the spacing of the pinholes. The large selection of fillings and techniques means that the student can give a personal interpretation to the lace and adapt the designs to individual projects.
