THE VERSATILE HORSETAIL OAK - A GREATLY UNDERRATED ORNAMENTAL SPECIES AND A CLASSIC BONSAI SUBJECT - SEED
GENUS CASUARINA EQUISETIFOLIA VAR. INCANA

The horsetail she-oak or casuarina equisetifolia is a small tree growing to perhaps 8 metres in its natural environment with a pendulous, drooping, normally open habit. Flowers are inconspicuous but these trees come in male and female forms and in spring the male trees can take on an attractive rusty hew from their pollen. Fruit is a cone to about one inch in length.

The natural range of this species is from New South Wales through Queensland and the Northern Territory and it is also found in South East Asia. Foliage consists of small branchlets, the leaves being reduced to rings of small triangular scales around the stems. The fruits of this tree are cylindrical cones to about one inch long.

Used extensively as a seaside street or park planting this species is windfirm, salt tolerant and nitrogen fixing and consequently it is particularly useful in areas of poor sandy soil where it is a valuable windbreak and soil binder. They are very hardy trees, drought tolerant but are not frost tolerant to any real degree so are best suited to warmer mediterranean or sub- to fully tropical areas. A versatile tree that has been greatly under-used as a garden or ornamental species with scope for imaginative use as is seen from the trained and sculpte example illustrated in a Japanese theme garden.

This species also makes an excellent bonsai subject, particularly the incana subspecies with its smaller size and leaf form.

Easy to propagate from seed and it can be grown in pots, tubs or indoors as a houseplant in colder climates.

This auction is for 50 seeds. Item shipped by ordinary mail upon receipt of clear funds. Postage cost of 60 cents. ***Save 50% postage & handling on additional lots that are combined for shipment.
