When Mate Alac left his impoverished native village on the Adriatic coast of Dalmatia, he believed he was coming to a land where there were easy fortunes to be made.  What he found in Australia was vastly different.

This is the story of a forty-year struggle against poverty, corruption, deceit and a harsh environment.  Alac set himself to conquer adversity, refusing to give in until at last he earned his place in the sun.

This is a gritty, uncompromising story, peopled with colourful characters, some likeable, some downright objectionable.  Through all the hardships, the tragedy and the setbacks, Alac never lost his humanity, sense of humour and love of life.  He is a true survivor who refuses to die.

Mate Alac was born in the village of Drasnice, Jugoslavia, in 1908, and emigrated to Western Australia at the age of eighteen.  He has worked as a sleeper cutter in the south-west and as a miner and copper prospector in the eastern goldfields.  He served as a transport driver in the army in World War Two. 

This 229 page softcover is illustrated with black and white photographs and is in a very good, tight, clean condition inside and out.
