Fishing at the creek one day in early summer, Katie finds an orphan sparrow.  When she discovers that her brother, Charles, has killed the bird's mother with his slingshot, she refuses to let him near.

Taking the baby bird home, Katie keeps it alive and safe.  Soon it is ready to fly, and she takes it to the "mythic gorge" near her home.  There, Charles surprises her, and she finally forgives him.

Over the summer, Katie and Charles watch their sparrow grow.  But the time comes when they realise that they must let it go free.

Ina Wallace's glowing illustrations add emotional richness and clarity to this heartwarming tale.  Set in Niagara Falls in the early 1900s, The Sparrow's Song is a timeless story about love, forgiveness and the gift of life.
