A MUST HAVE for the serious collector, this incredible vintage gown by one of the most remarkable fashion icons of the 20th century is in pristine condition. Don't let this rare and elite vintage treasure get away... you may not have the opportunity to own a gown of this provenance and quality of design again!

The Vicomtesse Jacqueline de Ribes has been at the forefront of international high fashion since she began appearing on the international best dressed lists in the 1960s. Jacqueline de Ribes was instrumental in influencing Valentino in the early stages of his career, prior to his opening his own fashion house in 1961, when he apprenticed at Jean Desses and helped the Vicomtesse de Ribes sketch her dress designs. Long feted as an international style icon, appearing in society pages and fashion magazines all over the world for many decades, the accomplished and incredibly stylish Vicomtesse de Ribes began to design couture gowns in 1983, where her atelier created a limited number of fine gowns, each with the impeccable workmanship of the haute couture that she had long favored. The inimitable Mme. de Ribes continues to influence the fashion world; in 1999 Jean Paul Gaultier dedicated his spring/summer runway show to her, stating that she embodied that rare Parisian style that was the inspiration for his collection.

This gown embodies several design elements that Jacqueline de Ribes is known for in her extravagent formal gown designs. There is an interplay of suggestive sexuality interspersed with olde-world elegance. The sheer silk lace panels are used for the entire back bodice to the small of the back, retaining the illusion of coverage with the sensuality of sheerness exposing glimpses of the back and small of the back through the sheer lace. This glamorous lace, black tinged with a lame' finish, also forms triangular side panels and the very low V-neckline insertion. The lace looks somewhat washed out in some of the photos, which were taken outdoors to show the detail of the velvet panels and swag; this is in the photos only and the lace is a fine, sheer black with silver threads that give it a slightly lame' finish. Beneath the lace is a layer of soft, fine silk tulle/net, which is sheer and provides additional stability to the very fine lace on the exterior. The black velvet is thick and draping, with a bustle swag providing the requisite refined elegance in the gown. There is a deep, diamond shaped front waist-cinching cumberbund center, with diagonal wide strips of velvet covering the bust. The center front cumberbund segment narrows and wraps around the hip at the sides and forms a swag at the small of the back, with a short ruffled loop beneath the rhinestone jeweled clasp, from which the long bustled train/swag emanates. Mme. de Ribes often incorporated jewel work into her gowns, as exemplified by the elaborately constructed rhinestone jeweled clasp above the swag and bustle. This jeweled clasp is in excellent condition, made from prong set rhinestones. There is a center rhinestone loop and "button" which is functional and opens to allow access to the zipper beneath.

The workmanship is impeccable, with the expected interior hand finish work generally associated with haute couture. There is a back zipper,and a zipper at the inside end of each sleeve. The lining is a thick and soft black charmeuse, believed to be silk, which shows no indication of prior wear and is hand finished. The skirt has a deep backseam vent for ease of movement.

This gown comes from the private collection of one of Palm Beach's most famous socialites and shows no indication of prior wear.
