The XJ40 Jaguar history;

XJ40 (1986–1994)

Throughout the 1970s Jaguar had been developing "Project XJ40" which was an all-new model intended to replace the original (by now Series III) XJ6. Due to problems at British Leyland and the fuel crisis, the car was continually delayed. Proposals from Jaguar's in-house designers and Pininfarina were received. Eventually, it was decided an internal design would be carried through to production.

This car was finally released in October 1986 with (in European markets) controversial square headlamps on all but the lowest specification; these were a lingering feature from the 1970s development. The car was considered more evolutionary than revolutionary,receiving improvements such as the second generation of Jaguar's IRS. It had to fight off a new competitor: the recently enlarged BMW 7 Series (E32). While the British press favoured the Jaguar, the XJ40 tended to lose comparison tests run by German publications. Only six-cylinder models were initially offered: a 2.9 L (in Europe) and a 3.6 L. The V12 (XJ12) and a long wheelbase model, including a high-roofed Daimler Majestic model (reviving the model name of 1958-1962) and destined for official use (one was used by the British prime minister), were again delayed, being launched at the very end of the XJ40's life.

The delay in fitting the V12 engine was due to the design of the engine bay which was too narrow to allow a V formation engine, said to have been designed deliberately in that fashion as the designers feared that their parent company would insist use of an engine based on their widely-used Rover V8 engine. After Jaguar's takeover by Ford in December 1989, work began on redesigning the engine bay to accommodate the V12. Ironically, thanks to Ford, Jaguar was later to find itself back in common ownership with another part of the old Rover family: Land Rover, where they had previously been thanks to British Leyland. However, having since developed their own more modern V8,they saw the reverse happen with a version of their engine fitted to Land Rover models, from which the old Rover V8 was finally dropped.

The single cam 2.9 L straight-6 engine found in Europe was a derivative of Jaguar's legendary 6.0 L V12 HE, but it proved to be underpowered and thirsty compared to the 3.6. L Frequent timing chain failures were also a problem. The engine was later replaced with the 3.2 L, based on the durable 3.6 L Vanden Plas, which then became the 4.0 L.

The Story Behind ALL JAG : Hi to ALL JAG lovers out there this particular Jaguar of mine was aquired from a family out in the country who I aquired this magnificent motor vechile from it was used to do a few private weddings incluinding his own why go and hire one or two of theses when for a few extra dollars you can own one you dont need to be a wealthy businessman or spend heaps of $$$ this car has always been cleaned and service  very well looked after most of the KMS are highway mileage a few years into this busines things turned sour between the owner and his partner so eventually this car sat in the  FAMILY garage for about 2 years ago till i aquired it. I have used the car as every day driver the car has done mostly high - way km's as i live a little out of town and for a few holidays it has been driven to lakes entrance hamilton and up and back the hume on vacations and many business trips for work conferences to Queensland,Sydney and all over Australia.This jaguar was used very frequentlly after i got it was always regulary serviced and maintained but of course knowing about jaguars espescially the V12 they need to be driven on a regular basis.

In the few short years i have owned this car have kept it serviced and well maintained as you can see for yourself in this time i have replaced the battery with a 13 plate heavy duty so it will turn over the engine with ease,changed transmission solenoid,fully overhauled front and rear brakes,serviced and regassed air conditioning,new rear brake pads,tuned engine 6 plugs ingectors, replaced front sway bar and bushes oil & filters and ,full detail and professionally polished and waxed, etc etc.If you look after a car it generally serves you well ,i have spent thousands of $$$$$ but every time i drive it its rewarding the ride comfort security of being safe in a luxuary and prestigious car.

Yes it does turn quite a lot of heads.The standard issue of wheels and tyres are pictured but have been changed as tyres for those odd rims are verry expensive the wheel on the car now are pictured above with near new tyres.The tyres which have 95% tread the interior which is cream/bone leather in very good condition for its age there is little bit of wear on drivers seat but no rips,all wood work is in excellent condition.    

The jaguar XJ40 had the same equipment level as any other sports or luxuary model year cars of same year and, with an original invoice price of some $150,000 plus on road costs, there were a few of these spectacular series built for Australia.Finished in gleaming White with cream/bone leather and timber walnut veneers with, this is a very attractive vehicle.  Its appeal is further enhanced by some upgrades carried out whilst i have owned this car the fiting of an extremely high quality AM/FM /CD player.Couple this to the XJ40 extremely high standard equipment level that includes, electric windows and mirrors, power seats with drivers position memory, climate control air conditioning, remote central door locking, and a electronic trip computer, and you have a sensational vehicle.

The car will come with NO RWC or warranties unless otherwise agreed upon in writing as to costs and payment of stamp duty and transfers same for personalised plates.There is absolutely no warranty, either statutory or otherwise.This car is being sold as inspected i own car outright there is NO finance or any money owing on car what so ever. Current Victorian registration may be retained by purchaser however RWC and transfer of such shall be their responsibility unless otherwise stated. The current personalised plates ALL-JAG will be replaced with standard issue Victorian plates prior to sale,unless you wish to purchase plates,with car the price is $1500.00 on top of purchase price of  XJ40 Jaguar Sedan unless otherwise stated in writing and agreed by both parties. Now some 21 years old, it is my opinion that this is a very good, useable example of Jaguars most affordable modern prestige car. Its overall condition and presentation belies its age and its specification makes it a very desirable vehicle.
