Made completely in the traditional way, this high quality 'Edo-bitsu' (Ohitsu) or Japanese Rice Serving bowl is made of real fragrant 'Kiso Sawara' Cypress Wood. This is used to serve 2nd helpings of cooked rice at the table. These are hand-made for us in the picturesque village of Kiso, nestled in the mountains of Nagano Prefecture. Kiso is famous for its fine Hinoki and Sawara Cypress wood and most of the finest kitchen & bath accessories come from this tiny village. Kiso Hinoki and Sawara Cypress are waterproof and resistant to rot and give off the most wonderful fragrance when wet. The oils in the sap (see close-up) add a subtle woody scent to the rice. This one measures: 6" or 15 cm across and 4½" or 11.5 cm deep and includes a somewhat larger lid. Beautifully hand-made by expert craftsmen of solid Kiso Sawara, it is precisely fitted and bound with four real copper bands so it will last for many years.
