'NIGHT SCENE AT SOEMONCHO OSAKA' 1933 by KAWASE HASUI 1883-1957

Unframed print on medium hand made Japanese washi paper. The use of gradation, ('bokashi') printing  is well demonstrated in this early evening Osaka scene.  The light and shadow elements stand out beautifully in this image, giving off a romantic aura.  Size paper: 260x390  Image: 240x365.  Excellent impression, very good colour showing good 'bokashi' in the sky and foreground.  Good bleed through verso, no creases, folds, rips or tears, clean and loose.

Undistributed. Acquired directly from the publisher Watanabe. Brushed Hasui signature BR. Red Kawase seal below. Displays 7mm Watanabe seal BL. Red Watanabe Heisei seal BR margin, indicates this is a genuine impression from the original blocks of 1933,produced during the Heisei period (post 1989).

Kawase Hasui

Born Tokyo1883. His childhood was associated with theatre connections, he did some set designs in the 1940's and 1950's for Kabuki. From early development he was captivated by landscapes, snow, rain and mist.  He studied western style art in 1907, especially landscapes. He was a pupil of Kaburogi Kiyokata who gave him the art name of Hasui.   Hasui worked extensively designing landscape prints for publisher Watanabe from approximately 1920. He was always extolling the block carvers and printers in getting newer and more subtle effects, especially with snow. After WW2 his work was used by the government to represent the softer side of Japanese life in tourist publications. Hasui produced over 600 landscape images in his lifetime to become recognised as the best landscape artist since Hiroshige.
