(1891)

John.W.Waterhouse

IMAGE SIZE 22.0 x 47.5cm

(Inclusive of borders 23.0 x 49.5cm)

A beautiful print from the original in oil by British Artist John.W.Waterhouse

(1849-1917)

Printed on quality fine art paper

In the Greek epic story The Odyssey by Homer, Ulysses the king of Ithaca returns to Greece, victorious from the Trojan Wars.

Unfortunately he offends the sea God Poseidon by killing his son the Cyclops and is condemned to wander the oceans for years.

Ulysses and his crew land on the Island of Aeolia, inhabited by Circe, a beautiful sorceress and the daughter of the sun who turns his crew into swine by giving them enchanted wine.

Ulysses is warned by one of his men who escaped her enchantments and he goes to confront her. Circe offers Ulysses a cup of enchanted wine but Ulysses is armed with moly, a herb given to him by the Gods and her spells have no effect on him. She then releases his crew from her spells and helps Ulysses by warning him of the dangers he will encounter on his journey home.
