Selected by jazz vocal maven Will Friedwald, THE JAZZ SESSIONS is the best June Christy compilation extant. In retospect, it isn't that Christy had the greatest voice or rhythmic sense or even particularly deep song interpretation. What she did have in abundance was simply great artistic integrity, almost in the way of a classy, gifted Broadway actress like Kim Stanley. Indeed, all the albums from SOMETHING COOL onward seem as carefully planned and "staged" as any theatrical production, and all without being too highbrow, though they usually featured the post-Stan Kenton modernist arrangements of Pete Rugulo. You can hear Christy here with Kenton himself on Bobby Troup's "Baby All The Time," from the great DUETS with the progressive bandleader on piano. Naturally, Christy's signature "Something Cool" and "Midnight Sun" from the landmark debut are included. And, in fact, nearly every track merits a special mention, Kern's lovely "Remind Me" most of all, plus one of the best versions of "Spring Can Really Hang You Up the Most" ever recorded.
