James Howe Carse (1819-1900)

Famous Colonial Painter

Born in Edinburgh 1919, Arrived Australia 1867, died 1900

Studied at Royal Academy School

His Father Alexander Carse is well known Painter

He is named after the animal painter James Howe (1780-1836)

It is Possible that James Howe Carse arrived in Adelaide with the Duke of Edinburgh aboard the Yacht Galata in 1867

Carse Travelled and Painted extensively in Australia and New Zealand

Foundation Member of the Victorian Academy of Arts 1870

the NSW Academy of Art 1871

the Art Society of NSW 1880

Painting En Plein Air during painting trips (often on Cigar Box Lid)

Complete his large canvases in the studio

Romantic Vistas in the brownish manner of scottish landscape

His best pictures are comarable with Von Guerard's

Died in 1900 at his Mosman home from alcoholism and old age, his body was discovered by the patron and collector Howard Hinton
