ITEM

Beautiful piece of woven silk from a Maru Obi. This is a highly prized end piece with golden status bars.

SIZE: 29"(74cm) long x 12.5"(32cm)wide intact (twice this width if opened out).

Because this is from a Maru obi, when opened out, you get twice as much patterned fabric as you would from a Fukuro Obi.

(Maru obi are the most formal, traditional and usually the most expensive of obi. They are very heavy and are therefore usually only worn on special occasions, such as weddings. Maru obi are made from a wider weave that is more than twice the width of a Fukuro obi, is fully patterned from end to end and then folded in half giving you the same pattern on both sides. (The more modern Fukuro Obi are only half the woven width of a Maru obi and are 40-60% patterned on the front side only, with a plain lining on the reverse.)

Obi fabric is a heavy brocade-like fabric that is intricately woven with silk and metallic threads. Obis are often also embroidered.

MATERIAL

Early intricately woven vintage silk with metallic gold threads.

This is the prized end piece of the obi and bears gold status bars. People often want this end piece because it makes a very nice wall hanging.

CONDITION	Good. Used. Some barely perceptible age mottling on the pale beige background that actually gives the fabric a lovely aged patina and in my opinion does not detract from this beautiful old piece.
COLOURS	Pale beige background woven with metallic gold, soft persimmon, indigo blue, pine green, soft black and pearly white.
DESIGN	Cranes flying over a landscape. chrysanthemums, bellflowers, cherry blossom, pine trees, maple leaves, paulownia, tortoiseshell and wave motifs. This design symbolizes longevity, strength and endurance, beauty.
