FABRIC FROM A USED VINTAGE JAPANESE KIMONO MARU OBI SASH/BELT

 #0895

FABRIC

Early Vintage Heavy Silk

(Obi fabric is similar to a very heavy woven and sometimes also embroidered brocade)

This fabric would look wonderful framed.

Because this is from a Maru obi the patterned fabric is on both sides and when opened out, you get twice as much.

SIZE

18" x 13" (46 cm x 33cm)

NOTE THAT THIS LISTING IS FOR A PIECE OF OBI FABRIC AND NOT FOR A FULL OBI

CONDITION Excellent used condition.  It looks as if it has never been used.
COLOURS

Palest ivory, black, white, shades of brown, shades of muted green, muted burgundy, rich yellow, lavendar mauve.

NB:  Be aware that your computer monitor may not accurately show the true colour of the fabric.

DESIGN

Gorgeous scene of peacocks beside a stream, pine trees and peony flowers.

When the fabric is opened out, you will see that you have two different peacocks.

As a suggestion, if the fabric were split in half, you would get a wonderful framed pair.

A CONDITION OF SALE

The seller accepts no responsibility for items that lost or damaged in the mail.

The seller is happy to send items insured or by Registered mail at an additional cost.

DISCLAIMER

The fabric sold is vintage or antique and although I have done my best to accurately describe the fabric, there may be some tiny marks, pulls or flaws that I have not noticed.

MARU OBI Maru obi are the most highly prized of obi.  They are also the heaviest and are usually only worn at formal occasions such as weddings.  They are also made from one wide woven piece, folded in half, and are patterned for their entire length.
FABRIC CARE

Dry clean only.  Colours will run if washed.

Protect with insect repellants.

Protect from humidity.

Obi fabrics often smell "stale" due to the storage and cleaning processes.  Airing your fabric should help to get rid of any smell.

Please also be aware that colour tends to look different on a computer monitor and that when received, the colours of the actual piece may slightly differ from what you expected.  For this reason I have endeavoured to describe colours as accurately as possible.

NOTE:  I will be listing other silk Obi and fabrics as well as items made from these fabrics from time to time.  The prices will vary hugely and are based on the original price paid for the Obi or fabric. With handmade items, prices will also include the cost of the materials used to construct the item.  Some of the gorgeous fabrics and obi's are rarer and more costly than others, and articles made from these will naturally be listed at a higher price.  My listed auction price for handmade items does not include my time and labour. AND don't forget, vintage and antique silk obi's and kimono fabrics won't be available forever.  They represent a little piece of Japanese heritage and culture - the history and customs of a bygone era.  They are luxuriously rich, exclusive, rare, and are something to be valued and treasured.

WHAT IS AN OBI?  Answer:  obi are the top-most sash worn with various styles of Japanese clothing.  Obi are worn with different types of kimono (robe) and function both to keep the robe closed and in place on the body, and as decoration.  Obi are traditionally made of silk.  Obi are worn by both men and women.  Women's kimono obi are twice as wide as men's and are considerably longer.  Most obi have a highly decorated "front" side and are often plain on the reverse (Fukuro and Nagoya obi's).  Some obi have the same woven pattern on both sides(Maru obi's for example are considered to be the most exclusive and expensive).  They are usually very decorative and colourful.

SUGGESTED USES FOR OBI FABRIC:  Bags & purses, eyeglass cases, cushions (perfect for bolster cushions), framed pictures, wall hangings, patchwork and applique, coverings on boxes, placemats and table runners.  Full obi's are great for table runners and bed runners. Be aware that colours may run if washed and for this reason obi fabric and coloured silk fabrics should be dry cleaned.

More Japanese fabrics and items made from Japanese fabrics are listed for sale in my store, VIRTUALLY VINTAGE GRAGGIE.  Stock is constantly changing, so add me to your favourites and drop in from time to time.

NOTE:  I will combine shipping for multiple purchases.  Please email me when you have finished shopping.  OVERSEAS BUYERS MUST PAY BY PAYPAL
