Paddington Press, 1979. 319 pp. ) Goddard's book is an examination of the cultural and social impact jazz made on the role of jazz as one of the solvents effecting the post-war changes in mores and values, and seeks to investigate why jazz was never assimilated or understood by educated Europeans. Goddard begins by showing how jazz - as opposed to ragtime - reached Europe as part of army bands and it was in France, with its more relaxed social and racial attitudes, that they found their best reception. The 'Jazz Age' itself, however, preceded real understanding of jazz music by many years, and Goddard points out that the popularity of jazz at that time was largely brought about by publicity, as for example in the case of the Original Dixieland Jazz Band - though Goddard observes that this band did swing more than contemporary Europeanised Negro bands. Throughout his book Goddard argues that it was the rhythmic qualities of jazz that eluded most Europeans who tried to recreate or analyse the music. In one chapter, when discussing the crucial importance of the theatre and dance in the development of jazz, he makes clear that jazz is inspired by dance and not vice-versa, and that the music reflected the complexity of dance rhythms, the mastery of which defeated European dancers and musicians. Various remarks by jazz musicians are quoted in the book to emphasise the novel stressing of 4/4 time as opposed to the 2/4 or 3/4 of most European popular music, and Gunther Schuller's description of this as 'the democratisation of the beat' is also referred to. It was this complexity which was to prove as difficult for musicians as for non-musicians.
